JMI Reschedules Entrance Tests for Jammu & Kashmir Students Amid India-Pakistan Tensions

In response to escalating tensions between India and Pakistan following Operation Sindoor, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) has announced the rescheduling of its entrance examinations for students from Jammu and Kashmir (J&K). Originally slated for May 10 and 11, 2025, these exams will now be conducted on alternative dates to ensure the safety and well-being of the affected students.
University Statement
JMI issued a statement on Friday, May 9, stating:
“JMI announces rescheduling of the Admission Tests to be held on May 10-11, 2025, for students of Jammu and Kashmir. The decision has been taken considering the ongoing situation and factoring in the well-being of students.”
While the revised dates for J&K students are yet to be announced, the entrance exams for other applicants will proceed as per the original schedule.
Background and Student Appeals
The decision follows appeals from student organizations, including the Jammu and Kashmir Students’ Association and the All India Students Association (AISA), who submitted a memorandum to the university administration. They requested the postponement of exams and the establishment of exam centers and hostels for affected students in J&K.
Nasir Khuehami, national convenor of the Jammu and Kashmir Students’ Association, highlighted the challenges faced by students:
“The only available route — the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway — is overcrowded, unsafe, and now closed due to heavy rain and landslides. Many students are stranded mid-way or unable to travel beyond Banihal. These are life-shaping exams, and the anxiety among the aspirants is palpable.”
Operation Sindoor and Regional Impact
Operation Sindoor, launched on May 7, was a military strike by Indian armed forces targeting terror camps across the border in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. This operation was in retaliation for the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, which resulted in the deaths of 26 people, including 25 tourists.
Following the operation, heavy shelling by Pakistani forces has continued for three consecutive days, prompting large-scale evacuations in Baramulla, Kupwara, and Bandipora districts, with thousands of civilians moved to safer locations.
Broader Educational Disruptions
The ongoing conflict has led to widespread educational disruptions in the region. Authorities have ordered the closure of educational institutions in Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Rajasthan, and Ladakh. Several schools in J&K have switched to online classes to ensure continuity in education.
Other examinations have also been affected. For instance, the Consortium of Medical, Engineering, and Dental Colleges of Karnataka (COMEDK) announced the postponement of its UGET 2025 and Uni-GAUGE E exams in light of the escalating tensions.
Next Steps
JMI has not yet announced the new dates for the rescheduled entrance exams for J&K students. The university has assured that it will provide updates in due course. In the meantime, students are advised to stay informed through official university channels and prepare accordingly.
