UP NEET UG 2025: DGME Orders Fresh Allotment After Allahabad HC Cancels 79% Quota in 4 Medical Colleges

The Directorate General of Medical Education (DGME), Uttar Pradesh, has announced a fresh round of seat allotment in NEET UG 2025 counselling following the Allahabad High Court’s decision to quash the 79% institutional quota in four state medical colleges.
The High Court, ruling on a petition challenging the excessive reservation of seats, declared the 79% quota as arbitrary and violative of constitutional principles. The order directly impacts admissions in four government medical colleges where this quota system was in place.
Impact on Counselling Process
According to DGME officials, the counselling schedule will be revised, and a new allotment list will be released soon. Students who had already been allotted seats in these four colleges will have their admissions put on hold until the fresh allotment is carried out.
“The counselling process will continue as per the court’s directions. Candidates will not face any loss of opportunity, and revised allotments will be issued in compliance with the High Court order,” a DGME statement read.
Background of the Case
The 79% quota in question was introduced to provide a high percentage of seats for students of specific institutional categories. However, several aspirants filed petitions arguing that such a reservation was unconstitutional and unfair to general candidates.
The Allahabad High Court upheld the students’ concerns, noting that institutional quotas cannot exceed reasonable limits and should not compromise the principles of merit-based admissions under NEET.
What Candidates Should Know
Revised seat allotment: Fresh lists will be published for the affected colleges.
Admissions on hold: Current admissions under the scrapped quota will be cancelled and re-allocated.
No loss of chance: DGME has assured that students will still retain their right to participate in the upcoming rounds.
Expert Opinion
Legal experts suggest that this verdict will set a precedent for future admission policies, ensuring a balance between institutional preference and meritocracy. Medical education activists have welcomed the order, calling it a “step towards fairness” in the NEET UG counselling system.
With the High Court’s directive, DGME is expected to complete the revised allotment before the next round of counselling begins, to prevent delays in the academic session.
