One College, Two Ranks: NIRF 2025 Lists BHU’s Faculty of Dental Sciences at 15 and 18

In a surprising development, the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2025 has placed Banaras Hindu University’s (BHU) Faculty of Dental Sciences at two different positions in the Dental category rankings15th and 18th. The anomaly has triggered debates among education observers and confusion among students and stakeholders.

    Ranking Discrepancy

According to the official NIRF list published by the Ministry of Education, BHU’s Dental Faculty appeared at:

    • Rank 15 under the Dental category.

    • Rank 18 again under the same category.

This unusual duplication has raised concerns about the transparency and accuracy of the ranking process, which is considered one of India’s most credible higher education evaluation systems.

    BHU’s Response

While BHU has not released an official statement yet, sources within the university indicated that the issue could be due to a technical duplication in data submission or tabulation. An official clarification is expected soon.

    A senior faculty member said:

“BHU’s Dental Sciences faculty has consistently ranked among the top dental institutions in India. The double entry seems to be an error, but it has created unnecessary confusion among aspirants.”

    Experts Raise Questions

Education experts pointed out that such discrepancies can impact the credibility of the ranking system:

    • Students and parents rely heavily on NIRF rankings for admissions.

    • Multiple rankings for the same college could create doubts about fairness.

    • The Ministry may need to revisit its audit and verification mechanisms.

    Impact on Students

For aspirants looking at BHU’s Dental Faculty, the confusion is more symbolic than practical, as the institution remains among the top 20 dental colleges in India. However, clarity is essential to maintain trust in the ranking framework.

    Call for Clarification

This is not the first time NIRF has faced criticism over technical errors and anomalies in published lists. Education analysts suggest that a detailed clarification note or corrected ranking list should be issued promptly to avoid misinformation.

    Looking Ahead

With NIRF rankings influencing not just student choices but also funding, collaborations, and institutional perception, stakeholders are urging the Ministry of Education to address the anomaly at the earliest.
