NMC Revises NEET UG 2025 Seat Matrix Again: 9,075 New MBBS Seats Added, Total Now 1.26 Lakh

    NMC

    New Delhi, October 2025:
In a fresh revision to the NEET UG 2025–26 admission framework, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has once again updated the MBBS seat matrix, approving 9,075 new seats while withdrawing 456 that were under legal or regulatory scrutiny. With these changes, India’s total sanctioned MBBS seats have risen to 1,26,600 (approximately 1.26 lakh) for the ongoing academic session.

This revision marks one of the most significant expansions in India’s medical education sector in recent years and is expected to impact counselling outcomes and competition levels across several states.

    ParameterDetails

    Reasons Behind the Revision

    1. Regulatory and Legal Issues:
A number of seats were withdrawn from institutions facing pending court cases or compliance failures. For instance, some medical colleges in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh lost recognition for certain batches due to infrastructure and faculty shortfalls.

    2. Renewal of Permissions:
Existing colleges are required to obtain renewal of permission annually. Non-renewal, inspection delays, or faculty shortages often lead to temporary reduction or suspension of seats.

    3. Establishment of New Colleges and Intake Expansion:
Many states have added new government and private medical colleges this year. Several existing institutions have also received approval to increase intake from 150 to 200 or 250 seats. States such as Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, and Karnataka have witnessed notable growth in MBBS capacity.

The state-wise increase reflects both the establishment of new medical colleges and intake hikes in existing ones.

    Impact on Counselling and Aspirants

    • Revised Choice Filling Window:
Following the seat matrix update, the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) has extended the Round 3 choice-filling deadline to October 13, 2025. Candidates are advised to review the revised seat availability before submitting or locking their preferences.

    • Reduced Competition Margins:
The addition of over 9,000 seats could slightly ease cut-offs, particularly in states where several government and private institutions have expanded capacity.

    • State Quota and Private College Opportunities:
Candidates targeting state quota or private medical seats may find new openings, especially in southern states that have seen the largest growth in seat availability.

    • Legal Vigilance:
As a few seats remain under legal scrutiny, students should keep track of official updates from NMC and MCC to avoid confusion during the later rounds of counselling.

    Expert Opinions

Education analysts have welcomed the expansion, calling it a “positive step” towards bridging India’s doctor-population gap. However, experts caution that seat growth must be accompanied by parallel improvements in faculty strength, infrastructure, hospital tie-ups, and clinical exposure to ensure quality medical education.

Public health professionals have also pointed out that while the increase will help in the long term, measures are needed to ensure equitable distribution of doctors across urban and rural areas.

    Conclusion

With this revision, India’s MBBS capacity now crosses the 1.26 lakh mark, representing a milestone in medical education. The NMC’s move aligns with the government’s larger goal to strengthen healthcare delivery through improved medical infrastructure and human resource expansion.

For NEET UG 2025 aspirants, this update brings renewed hope — and a chance to re-strategize preferences before the next round of counselling.
