This year, the evaluation criteria is also modified. The faculty-to-student ratio has been changed from 1:15 to 1:10 in medical institutes and increased from 1:15 to 1:20 in the state government universities. The ranking framework evaluates institutions on five broad parameters — teaching, learning and resources, research and professional practice, graduation outcomes, outreach and inclusivity and perception.

The NDA government started the India Ranking in 2016 where they give ranking to higher educational institutes based on criteria decided by them. With 13 categories, 2013 edition of NIRF was the largest so far. The categories were — overall, university, colleges, engineering, management, pharmacy, law, medical, architecture, dental, agriculture and allied sectors, innovation and research.

Maintaining its top position, IIT Madras has clung to the top spot under the overall category followed by the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi and IIT Kanpur.

Even under the engineering category, IIT Madras remains ahead followed by IIT Delhi, Bombay, Kanpur and Kharagpur.
