NEET UG 2024: 1,08,940 MBBS seats in India; maximum medical colleges, seats in Tamil Nadu
NEET UG results 2024 will be declared by the NTA on June 14. Here’s the state-wise number of government, private medical colleges, MBBS seats.
Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) is one of the most sought-after courses and the Government has significantly increased the number of medical colleges and MBBS seats in the past 10 years. In a recent reply to the Lok Sabha, the minister of health and family welfare department said that MBBS seats have been increased by 112% from 51,348 before 2014 to 1,08,940 as of now.
National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test Undergraduate (NEET UG 2024) is the gateway exam for admission to MBBS seats in government medical colleges and participating universities. NEET UG also remains the single-largest national-level exam in India. The National Testing Agency (NTA), which is responsible for conducting the medical entrance exam, conducted NEET UG 2024 on May 5.
Over 24 lakh candidates who appeared are now awaiting the NEET UG answer key 2024. As per the schedule announced by the NTA, the NEET UG results 2024 will be declared on June 14 at the official website, exams.nta.ac.in/NEET/.
Replying to a question, the Union health minister Mansukh Mandaviya told the Lok Sabha that there is an increase of 82% in medical colleges from 387 before 2014 to 706 as of now.
“Further during the last five years,, the number of medical colleges has been increased from 499 in 2018-19 to 648 in 2022-23 along with increase in MBBS seats from 70012 seats in 2018-19 to 96077 seats in 2022-23,” the minister said.

The state and Union Territory-wise number of private and government medical colleges and the MBBS seats for the current academic year 2023-24. As per the data shared by the health ministry, Tamil Nadu has the highest number of 5,275 MBBS seats in government medical colleges, followed by Maharashtra government medical colleges which offer 5,125.
In the private medical colleges category, Karnataka private college offer highest number of 7,995 MBBS seats, followed by Tamil Nadu with 6,375.
