IIT Madras launches first-of-its-kind cancer genome database

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has launched a pioneering cancer genome database to advance cancer research in India. This initiative focuses on identifying cancer-specific biomarkers, particularly for early breast cancer detection.
Key Highlights:
- Addressing Data Gaps: Despite high cancer rates, India has been under-represented in global cancer genome research. This database aims to fill the gap in the genomic landscape for different cancers in India.
- Comprehensive Data Collection: The project has completed whole exome sequencing of 480 breast cancer patient tissue samples collected across the country, providing a compendium of genetic variants representing the contemporary Indian breast cancer population.
- Collaborative Effort: IIT Madras collaborated with Karkinos Healthcare, Mumbai, the Chennai Breast Clinic, and the Cancer Research and Relief Trust, Chennai, to analyze the data and assemble the anonymized summary of genetic variants from Indian breast cancer samples.
- Centre of Excellence: The research was led by the institute’s Centre of Excellence on Cancer Genomics and Molecular Therapeutics, funded under the Government of India’s “Institutions of Eminence” initiative.
This database is expected to be an invaluable resource for identifying cancer-specific biomarkers in India, enabling early detection of breast cancers and aiding in the development of novel drug targets for better treatment strategies tailored to the Indian population.
