OVERVIEW

The Joint Entrance Examination (Advanced) is conducted by the IITs under the guidance of the Joint Admission Board (JAB). A candidate’s performance in this examination serves as the basis for admission to the Bachelor’s, Integrated Master’s, and Dual Degree programs (at the 10+2 level) in all IITs.

ABOUT

Exam Pattern

  • Two papers, each of 3 hours duration – Online (Fully Computer-Based Test) mode.
  • Both papers are compulsory.
  • Each question paper consists of three separate sections: Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.
  • The question papers will consist of objective-type questions (multiple-choice and numerical answer type) designed to test the comprehension, reasoning, and analytical ability of candidates.
  • Negative marks will be awarded for incorrect answers to some of the questions.
  • The question papers will be available in both English and Hindi. Candidates will have the option to choose (and switch between) their preferred language at any time during the examination.

 

Schedule

The JEE (Advanced) – 2026 will be held on Sunday, May 17, 2026, as per the following schedule:

  • Paper 1: 09:00 to 12:00 IST
  • Paper 2: 14:30 to 17:30 IST

Performance in JEE (Main) 2026

  • Candidates should be among the top 2,50,000 successful candidates (including all categories) in the B.E./B.Tech. Paper of JEE (Main) 2026.
  • Note: The total number of candidates may be slightly greater than 2,50,000 if there are tied ranks or scores in any category.

Note: OCI/PIO candidates are not eligible for any reservation benefits (e.g., GEN-EWS, OBC-NCL, SC, ST) except for OPEN-PwD.

Age Limit

Candidates should have been born on or after October 1, 2001. However, SC, ST, and PwD candidates are given a 5-year age relaxation, meaning they should have been born on or after October 1, 1996.

 

Number of Attempts

A candidate can attempt JEE (Advanced) a maximum of two times in two consecutive years.

Appearance in Class XII (or Equivalent) Examination

  • Candidates must have appeared for the Class XII (or equivalent) examination for the first time in either 2025 or 2026, with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as compulsory subjects.
  • Those who appeared for the Class XII examination for the first time in 2024 or earlier are NOT eligible.
  • Exception: If a candidate’s Class XII examination Board declared the results for the academic year 2023-24 on or after June 18, 2024, then those candidates who appeared in 2024 are also eligible to appear in JEE (Advanced) 2026.
  • Note: Performance in Class XII is also considered for admission to IITs (separate from exam eligibility). You can check those criteria here.

 

Earlier Admission at IITs

  • A candidate must NOT have been admitted to an IIT under any academic program listed in the JoSAA 2025 Business Rules. This applies even if the candidate did not continue the program or only accepted the seat by reporting online/at a centre.
  • Candidates whose admission to an IIT was cancelled after joining are also NOT eligible.
  • Exceptions: Candidates admitted to a preparatory course in an IIT for the first time in 2025 are eligible.
  • Candidates who were allocated a seat in an IIT through JoSAA 2025 but did not report, withdrew before the last round, or had their seat cancelled before the last round are eligible.

 

Foreign Nationals

  • Candidates who are not Indian citizens and do not hold an OCI/PIO card are treated as foreign nationals.
  • Foreign nationals are not required to appear for JEE (Main) 2026. They can register directly for JEE (Advanced) 2026 provided they satisfy the other eligibility criteria.
  • These candidates are considered in addition to the 2,50,000 Indian nationals qualified for the exam.

  • The official mock test is made available to candidates appearing for JEE Advanced.
  • Candidates can take the mock test to understand the exam pattern and familiarize themselves with the interface.

Procedure

Registration

  • Registration for JEE (Advanced) 2026 is expected to begin in April 2026, following the declaration of JEE (Main) results.
  • Only candidates who satisfy all the eligibility criteria can register.
  • The last date to register is expected to be in May 2026.

 

Application Procedure

Steps

  • Step 1: Fill out the Registration Form at the JEE (Adv) web portal.
  • Step 2: Upload Scanned Certificates.
  • Step 3: Pay the Registration Fee.

 

Required Documents

All Candidates

  • Class X certificate (if the date of birth is mentioned in it) OR Birth certificate.
  • Class XII (or equivalent examination) certificate (for those who appeared for this examination in 2025 or 2026).

Admit Card

  • Candidates who successfully register for the JEE (Advanced) examination can download the admit card from the JEE (Advanced) portal as per the notified schedule.
  • The admit card will contain the name, roll number, photograph, signature, date of birth, category, address of the candidate, address of the Test Centre allotted, and test schedule.
  • Candidates should carefully examine the entries in the admit card and, in case of any discrepancy, contact the Chairman, JEE (Advanced) 2026 of the respective zonal coordinating IIT.
  • A printed copy of the downloaded admit card along with an original photo identity card should be produced at the time of examination.

Note

  • Candidates have to compulsorily choose 8 cities/towns of their choice at the time of online registration.
  • Efforts will be made to allot the city/town from among the candidate’s choices, but a different city/town may be allotted under exceptional circumstances.
  • Requests for change of city/town will not be entertained under any circumstances.

 

 

Candidate Responses

  • The responses of the candidates who have appeared for both Paper 1 and Paper 2, recorded during the exam, will be available for them to view, download, and print from the JEE (Advanced) candidate portal.
  • Candidates can access a copy of their responses as per the notified schedule.

 

 

Answer Keys

  • The provisional answer keys for both papers will be displayed on the JEE (Advanced) website as per the notified schedule.
  • The provisional answer key is only tentative and is subject to change.
  • Candidates who are not satisfied with the answer key may challenge it online during the stipulated time.
  • The final answer key will be made available as per the notified schedule.
  • In the event that a question needs to be dropped, full marks for that question will be awarded to all candidates.

Result

Rank List

  • Only candidates who appear in both Paper 1 and Paper 2 will be considered for ranking.
  • The rank list will be prepared based on the aggregate marks obtained by the candidate.
  • A candidate who qualifies in more than one category will be considered in all the categories to which he/she belongs for the purpose of ranking.
  • Only candidates who score the minimum prescribed marks in each subject and in aggregate will be included in the rank list.

 

 

Result

  • Results will be available on the JEE (Advanced) website once they are notified.
  • Category-wise All India Ranks (AIR) of successful candidates will be available on the JEE (Advanced) website after the results are declared.
  • Individual rank cards will not be sent to candidates.

 

Architecture Aptitude Test

Candidates wishing to join the B.Arch. program at IITs will have to pass the Architecture Aptitude Test (AAT).

AAT Details

  • Only those candidates who have qualified in JEE (Advanced) 2026 are eligible to appear in AAT 2026.
  • Candidates must register online at the JEE (Advanced) website for AAT during the notified period.
  • The exam will consist of one paper of three hours duration.
  • The question paper for AAT will be available in English language only.
  • The syllabus of the test can be checked here.
  • AAT will be conducted on the notified date at all the IITs.
  • Candidates should bring their own drawing and colouring aids.
  • No separate admit card will be issued for AAT, and the original admit card of JEE (Advanced) should be produced at the AAT examination hall.
  • Candidates securing marks above the cutoff will be declared pass in the test. There will be no separate cutoff for students of any category.
  • There will be no separate rank list for AAT, and allotment of seats will be solely based on the category-wise All India Rank in JEE (Advanced) 2026.

Important Information

  • Only pens, pencils, drinking water in a transparent bottle, the downloaded admit card, and an original photo identity card are permitted inside the examination hall.
  • Candidates arriving at the examination centre after the commencement of the examination for each paper (09:00 IST for Paper 1 and 14:30 IST for Paper 2) will not be allowed to take the test.

Counselling

Admission to IITs

For admission to IITs, a candidate should satisfy at least one of the following two criteria:

  • Must have secured at least 75% aggregate marks in the Class XII (or equivalent) Board examination. For SC, ST, and PwD candidates, the aggregate marks should be at least 65%.
  • Must be within the category-wise top 20 percentile of successful candidates in his/her respective Class XII (or equivalent) board examination.

 

All seats allocated to foreign nationals will be supernumerary, with a cap of 10% of the total seats in each course. Foreign nationals are not eligible for any reservation under the GEN-EWS, OBC-NCL, SC, ST, or PwD categories.
