Education Budget 2025: Modi government cuts Rs 1,000 crore from minority, ST scholarships

In the Union Budget 2025, the Indian government has reduced funding for several scholarship schemes aimed at minority and Scheduled Tribe (ST) students. Notably, the pre-matric scholarship for minorities has been allocated ₹326.16 crore for 2024-25, a significant decrease from ₹1,378 crore in 2021-22. The Ministry of Minority Affairs explained that this reduction is due to the scheme now covering only students in classes 9 and 10, as those in classes 1 to 8 are covered under the Right to Education Act.
Additionally, the Merit-cum-Means Scholarship for professional and technical courses has seen a decrease in allocation, with ₹33.80 crore earmarked in the interim budget for 2024-25, down from ₹44 crore in the previous financial year. The Education Scheme for Madrasas and Minorities experienced the most substantial cut, receiving only ₹2 crore in the interim budget, compared to ₹10 crore in the prior year.
These reductions have raised concerns among experts and advocacy groups, who argue that decreasing financial support for education among minority and ST communities could exacerbate existing educational disparities. They emphasize the importance of scholarships in providing access to education for students from disadvantaged backgrounds and caution that such budget cuts may hinder efforts toward educational equity.
