CBSE Directs Schools to Set Up ‘Sugar Boards’ to Monitor Students’ Sugar Intake

New Delhi, May 17, 2025 — In a bid to promote healthier dietary habits among students, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has issued a circular directing all affiliated schools to establish ‘Sugar Boards’—committees tasked with monitoring and managing students’ sugar consumption within school premises.

The move comes in response to rising concerns over childhood obesity, diabetes, and other health issues linked to excessive sugar intake. CBSE officials stated that the initiative is part of a broader effort to instill nutritional awareness and promote long-term wellness among schoolchildren.

“These boards will play a crucial role in creating a sugar-conscious environment in schools,” the circular read. “From reviewing canteen menus to conducting awareness sessions and limiting access to high-sugar items, the Sugar Boards will function as watchdogs and educators.”

Schools have been asked to constitute the Sugar Boards by including members from the school management, teachers, parents, nutritionists, and student representatives. Their responsibilities will include:

    • Auditing and modifying school canteen offerings.

    • Organizing workshops on sugar-related health risks.

    • Promoting alternatives such as fruits, dry snacks, and sugar-free beverages.

    • Tracking consumption patterns through regular surveys.

Reactions to the directive have been mixed. While health experts and some parents have lauded the move, citing the growing prevalence of lifestyle diseases in younger populations, others have raised concerns about implementation and over-regulation.

“This is a positive step toward preventive healthcare,” said Dr. Anjali Mehta, a pediatric nutritionist. “Educating children early about the dangers of excess sugar can have lifelong benefits.”

However, school administrators are seeking more clarity. “We support the intent, but will need guidelines on enforcement and parental involvement,” said Rajesh Kapoor, principal of a CBSE school in Delhi.

CBSE has assured that detailed implementation guidelines and support materials will be shared in the coming weeks.
