The placement statistics for PhD scholars at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi have been notably low. In a special PhD placement drive conducted in June 2024, only about 15% of approximately 150 scholars secured positions. This trend persisted during the December placement phase, with less than 15% placement among the same cohort.

Despite these challenges, there has been a significant increase in the number of PhD scholars participating in placements. The 2023-24 academic year saw a six-fold rise in PhD scholars engaging in the placement process compared to the previous year. This increase is partly attributed to the specialized placement drive for PhD candidates held in June 2024, which boosted offers sevenfold.

However, the overall placement rate for PhD scholars remains low, leading to calls from student volunteers at IIT Delhi’s Office of Career Services for a new approach to PhD placements. They advocate for tailored strategies to enhance employment opportunities for research candidates, acknowledging the specialized nature of their expertise and the niche roles they are suited for.

It’s important to note that while on-campus placement efforts have seen some success, a majority of PhD scholars continue to secure roles through off-campus avenues. This trend is expected, given the specialized and niche roles that PhD graduates typically occupy.
