Tamil Nadu Raises MBBS Fees for Self‑Financing Medical Colleges

The Tamil Nadu Directorate of Medical Education has approved new, higher annual tuition fees for MBBS seats in self-financing medical colleges, effective from the 2025–26 academic cycle and applicable through 2027–28.
Management quota seats will now cost ₹15 lakh per year—an increase of ₹1.5 lakh from ₹13.5 lakh previously.
NRI quota seats will be priced at ₹27 lakh, up ₹2.5 lakh from ₹24.5 lakh.
At state private universities, management quota seats are ₹16.2 lakh and NRI seats ₹30 lakh—reflecting hikes of ₹60,000 to ₹2.5 lakh, depending on the category.
Government quota seats in these colleges remain unaffected, holding steady at ₹4.35–4.5 lakh for self-financing institutions and ₹5.4 lakh in private universities.
The fee structure, determined by a committee chaired by Justice R. Pongiyappan, also stipulates that institutions may levy an additional ₹60,000 per student as a development fee. Notably, any other recurring or non-recurring charges are disallowed; colleges must cover items such as hostel, transport, and mess independently. Infractions could prompt withdrawal of National Medical Commission approval or university disaffiliation.
⚠️ Student Concerns Over Transparency
Parents and aspirants have expressed concerns around hidden extra costs. Many students end up paying an additional ₹3.6–4.1 lakh for services such as hostels, transport, libraries, and mess—amounting to an overall cost of ₹20–23 lakh for management seats, and up to ₹30 lakh for deemed university seats. Following these concerns, officials have reportedly asked medical colleges to disclose all fee components upfront on the counselling portal.
🔍 Why This Matters
The fee hike tightens financial pressure on aspirants and their families, particularly those seeking seats in management and NRI quotas.
With MBBS seats limited to around 11,700 statewide and rising demand from over 72,000 applicants this year, competition is fierce. Higher costs could deter many from applying.
Transparency efforts are underway, but full disclosure of total costs during counselling remains essential to protect students from unexpected financial burdens.
Students and parents are advised to review the detailed fee notification before seat selection, ensuring they budget for development fees, hostels, mess, and other charges not covered by tuition alone.
