NMC Seat Matrix 2025: 1.23 Lakh MBBS Seats in 808 Medical Colleges; 6,850 Added, Over 1,000 Dropped

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has released the MBBS seat matrix for the 2025–26 academic session, revealing a total of 1.23 lakh MBBS seats across 808 medical colleges in India. While this marks a net increase in opportunities for medical aspirants, the data also highlights significant changes, with 6,850 new seats being added but more than 1,000 seats being removed due to non-compliance and de-recognition of certain institutions.
Key Highlights of MBBS Seat Matrix 2025
Total medical colleges: 808
Total MBBS seats: ~1.23 lakh
Seats added in 2025: ~6,850
Seats dropped: ~1,000+
Net gain: ~5,800 seats
Expansion of Medical Education
The increase in MBBS seats reflects the government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen the healthcare system and make medical education more accessible. Several new government and private medical colleges have been approved, particularly in under-served states, helping bridge the doctor–population ratio.
States such as Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, and Madhya Pradesh have seen the highest seat additions due to the launch of new government medical colleges and expansion in private institutions.
Seat Drop and Compliance Issues
At the same time, more than 1,000 seats have been dropped across various colleges. This step was taken after NMC inspections revealed issues such as:
Inadequate faculty strength
Shortage of infrastructure facilities
Failure to meet required student–patient ratios
Non-compliance with updated NMC norms
These measures are intended to maintain the quality of medical education and prevent dilution of standards despite rapid expansion.
What This Means for NEET UG 2025 Aspirants
The updated seat matrix will directly impact NEET UG 2025 counselling and admissions. With the addition of nearly 6,000 net new seats, aspirants may have slightly higher chances of securing a government or private MBBS seat compared to previous years. However, intense competition is expected to continue given the high number of NEET applicants (over 25 lakh in 2025).
Expert View
Education experts believe the increase in seats is a positive development, but stress the need for balanced growth in postgraduate seats, faculty recruitment, and infrastructure upgrades. They caution that merely expanding undergraduate seats without strengthening higher medical education may create bottlenecks in the future.
