NIRF Ranking 2025: Over Half of Management Institutes, 31% of Colleges Publish Zero Research

    NIRF

The Ministry of Education has released the NIRF India Rankings 2025, revealing a concerning trend in India’s higher education landscape. According to the rankings, more than 50% of management institutions and 31% of colleges reported zero research output, highlighting the urgent need to strengthen research culture across academic institutions.

    Key Findings

    • Management Institutions: Over half of the institutes ranked under the management category did not publish any research papers in the year under evaluation.

    • Colleges: 31% of colleges across disciplines reported no publications, indicating a lack of focus on research activities despite being part of the NIRF ranking framework.

    • Top Performers: Institutions that consistently produced high-quality research, such as IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore, IIM Calcutta, and select DU colleges, continue to lead the rankings.

    Implications

The NIRF data underscores the disconnect between teaching and research in several higher education institutions. While many colleges excel in teaching and student outcomes, their lack of research output may impact:

    • Academic reputation and global rankings.

    • Opportunities for faculty development and collaboration.

    • Innovation and contribution to knowledge creation in India.

    Government Perspective

The Ministry of Education emphasizes that NIRF rankings not only assess teaching and learning outcomes but also research and professional practice, aiming to encourage institutions to focus on both pedagogy and research excellence. The findings suggest a need for:

    • Increased funding for research projects.

    • Development of research infrastructure.

    • Encouraging faculty and students to publish in peer-reviewed journals.

    Way Forward

While the NIRF 2025 rankings recognize top-performing institutions, the data also serves as a wake-up call for management schools and colleges that lag in research. Experts suggest that integrating research-oriented curricula, industry projects, and faculty incentives can improve India’s overall academic and research output.
