The Ministry of Education will announce the much-awaited National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2025 rankings on September 4, 2025. This marks the 10th edition of the NIRF rankings, which evaluate India’s top universities, colleges, and professional institutes.

This year, NIRF will publish rankings across 16 categories, including a new segment based on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Updated evaluation parameters will also reflect the changing landscape of higher education and research in India.

What’s New in NIRF 2025?

• Introduction of an SDG-focused category to measure institutes on sustainability and social responsibility.

• Refined evaluation metrics, aligning with global standards and academic trends.

• More emphasis on innovation, research quality, and employability of graduates.

Top Institutions in India (2022–2024): A Recap

Over the past three years, IIT Madras has consistently ranked first, followed by IISc Bengaluru. Other institutions like IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Roorkee, IIT Guwahati, AIIMS Delhi, and JNU have also consistently featured in the top 10.

Why NIRF Matters

The NIRF rankings serve as an important benchmark for students, parents, and policymakers, helping them assess institutional performance in areas like teaching, learning, research, outreach, and employability. With the 2025 edition introducing new evaluation rules, significant changes in rankings are expected.
