Jharkhand Medical College Cancels Student’s Admission Over Fake ST Certificate

In a major disciplinary action, a medical college in Jharkhand has cancelled the admission of a student after it was found that the candidate had secured admission using a fake Scheduled Tribe (ST) certificate. The incident has sparked strong reactions across the academic community, with authorities emphasizing that fraudulent claims of reservation will not be tolerated in the state’s medical admission process.
According to official sources, the irregularity came to light during a routine verification of documents conducted by the State Health Department and the Directorate of Medical Education (DME), Jharkhand. The student, whose identity has been withheld pending further investigation, was admitted to the MBBS course under the ST category during NEET UG counselling.
Forgery Detected During Verification
The scrutiny of the caste certificate revealed that it was not issued by the competent authority and the details did not match government records. Upon confirmation, the college administration immediately revoked the student’s admission and reported the matter to the concerned district authorities and the State Caste Scrutiny Committee for further legal action.
Authorities’ Response
A senior DME official stated that strict measures will be taken to ensure transparency and integrity in the medical admission process.
“Using fake documents to gain admission under reserved categories is a serious offence. The department has zero tolerance for such misconduct, and appropriate legal proceedings will follow,” the official said.
Impact on Admission and Further Action
The vacated MBBS seat will likely be offered to a deserving candidate from the waiting list in accordance with NEET UG counselling norms. Meanwhile, a criminal case may be filed against the student under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Jharkhand Caste Verification Rules.
Broader Implications
This case has reignited discussions on the need for strict digital verification systems during admission processes to prevent misuse of caste-based reservation benefits. Experts have urged the state government to introduce real-time validation of certificates through linked government databases to maintain fairness and credibility.
Conclusion
The incident serves as a reminder that integrity and honesty remain the foundation of merit-based education. Authorities in Jharkhand have reiterated their commitment to upholding fairness in admissions and ensuring that benefits of reservation policies reach the genuinely deserving candidates.
