JEE Main 2026: NTA Introduces Virtual Calculator for the First Time — How It Will Function in CBT

In a major update for engineering aspirants, the National Testing Agency (NTA) has announced that a virtual calculator will be introduced for the first time in the JEE Main 2026 computer-based examination (CBT). This marks a significant change in the test interface, aimed at making the exam experience more convenient and aligned with global online testing standards.
What’s New
Until now, candidates appearing for JEE Main were not allowed to use any type of calculator—physical or virtual—relying solely on manual calculations. However, starting with JEE Main 2026 Session 1 (January 2026), candidates will have access to an on-screen scientific calculator within the CBT interface.
How the Virtual Calculator Will Work
The calculator will appear as an on-screen pop-up tool during the exam.
It will include basic arithmetic functions such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, along with scientific features like trigonometric, logarithmic, and square root operations.
Candidates can access it by clicking the “Calculator” icon on the exam screen.
The calculator can be moved or minimized as needed while attempting questions.
Rough work can still be done on the physical sheet provided at the exam centre.
What Candidates Should Know
No physical calculators or electronic devices will be allowed in the examination hall.
The virtual calculator is designed to maintain fairness while reducing manual errors in lengthy numerical problems.
It is expected to benefit candidates in numerical-type questions, particularly in Physics and Mathematics sections.
Candidates are advised to familiarize themselves with the virtual calculator interface through practice tests before the exam day.
Expert View
Education expert Vikas Kumar has welcomed this move, calling it a “student-friendly step” that aligns with international testing models like SAT and GRE. However, they also caution that speed and accuracy remain crucial, as switching between the calculator and question screen may take extra time.
