CBSE Class 10 Two-Exam System 2026: Who is Eligible for the Second Attempt?

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has introduced a two-exam system for Class 10 from 2026, allowing students a second chance to improve their performance. Under this system, students will appear for the first board exam in February–March, followed by an optional second attempt in May–June.
Here’s a detailed look at who is eligible for the second attempt:
🔹 First Exam is Mandatory
All students must appear for the first board examination. Those who do not take the first exam will not be allowed to appear in the second attempt.
🔹 Who Can Appear for the Second Attempt?
✔️ Students Seeking Improvement
Students who have passed in the first exam can choose to improve their scores in the second attempt.
- Improvement is allowed in up to three subjects.
✔️ Compartment Students
Students who fail in one or two subjects in the first exam can appear in the second attempt to clear those subjects.
✔️ Mixed Category (Improvement + Compartment)
Students can also opt for a combination, such as improving marks in some subjects while reappearing for failed ones.
❌ Who is Not Eligible?
- Students who miss the first exam in three or more subjects will not be eligible for the second attempt.
- Such candidates may be placed in the “Essential Repeat” category and may need to repeat the academic year.
🔹 Key Rules to Know
- The second exam is optional, not compulsory.
- The best score out of the two attempts will be considered as the final result.
- The system is designed to reduce exam stress and provide students with a fair chance to improve their performance.
📅 Exam Timeline
- First Exam: February–March 2026
- Second Exam: May–June 2026
📰 Conclusion
The new two-exam system by CBSE marks a significant reform in the evaluation process. By offering a second chance, it ensures that students are not judged solely on one performance and have the opportunity to enhance their results within the same academic year.
