NEET-UG May Shift to Computer-Based Test; Ministry Studies Feasibility

The Ministry of Education (MoE) is reviewing the feasibility of conducting the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test for Undergraduates (NEET-UG) in a computer-based test (CBT) format, moving away from the current pen-and-paper system. The proposal comes in the wake of repeated concerns about exam leaks, paper security, and the logistical challenges of managing India’s largest medical entrance test.
Why the Change is Being Considered
Exam Security: The traditional paper format has faced vulnerabilities, including leaks and malpractice. A CBT format is seen as more secure and trackable.
Efficiency: Digital testing could speed up result processing, reduce paperwork, and simplify logistics.
Global Alignment: Many competitive exams in India and abroad are already conducted online. Transitioning NEET-UG would modernize the system.
Expert Recommendations: A high-level committee led by former ISRO chief K. Radhakrishnan has advised reforms, including exploring digital formats and multi-stage testing.
Key Factors Under Review
Infrastructure Readiness: Availability of secure computer labs, reliable internet, backup power, and servers across the country.
Equity & Access: Ensuring that students in rural or underprivileged areas are not disadvantaged due to lack of exposure to computers or internet facilities.
Operational Planning: Handling large candidate volumes, possibly in multiple shifts; providing mock tests for practice; training exam staff.
Stakeholder Consultation: Inputs from the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, National Testing Agency (NTA), experts, students, and parents.
Challenges Ahead
Digital Divide: Students from remote or rural areas may find it difficult to adapt without adequate support.
Training & Familiarisation: Both students and administrators would need practice with the CBT interface.
Costs & Upgrades: Building and maintaining secure, large-scale computer infrastructure across India.
Transition Risks: Any sudden shift without sufficient preparation could disrupt lakhs of aspirants.
Timeline
NEET-UG 2025 will continue in the pen-and-paper mode, with no changes expected this year.
The earliest possible shift to CBT is being considered for NEET-UG 2026, depending on infrastructure readiness and government approvals.
The NTA is expected to submit detailed plans, including pilot runs and digital mock test modules, before any official rollout.
What Students Should Do
Start practising with online mock tests to build familiarity with digital exam formats.
Watch for official announcements and guidelines from NTA and MoE.
Coaching institutes may begin offering CBT-style preparation to help aspirants transition smoothly.
This move, if implemented, could modernize India’s biggest medical entrance exam, but experts warn that success will depend on balancing security, fairness, and accessibility.
