Maharashtra NEET UG & PG Aspirants Protest New 10% EWS Quota, Seek Meeting with CM

    Maharashtra

NEET UG and PG aspirants in Maharashtra have voiced strong opposition to the state’s decision to implement a 10% Economically Weaker Section (EWS) reservation in private medical colleges, citing concerns over access and fairness. Student and parent representatives are demanding an urgent meeting with the Chief Minister to reverse or modify the policy.

    🔍 What’s at Stake

    • The Maharashtra CET Cell’s admission brochure, released on July 23, introduced a 10% EWS reservation for private unaided medical and dental colleges (excluding minority institutions) under the State Quota.

    • No corresponding increase in total intake has been sanctioned. As a result, general category seats may shrink from 100% to approximately 60% for undergraduates and possibly as low as 5% for postgraduate admissions.

    😠 Aspirant and Institutional Concerns

    • Parent and student groups argue that introducing EWS quotas without expanding intake amounts to cutting into the existing open‑merit seats, not increasing access for EWS candidates.

    • Representations by groups like the Association of Managements of Unaided Private Medical and Dental Colleges (AMUPMDC) emphasize they were not consulted prior to the policy’s announcement and warn of financial and operational challenges if general merit seats are arbitrarily reduced.

📉 Impact on PG Medical Admissions

    • Maharashtra has roughly 900 PG medical seats in private colleges. With the addition of 10% EWS reservation, general category opportunities could plummet to just 5% if no seat expansion occurs.

    • The state is unique in adopting this policy without a prior increase in capacity, sparking comparisons to the 25% seat expansion that accompanied EWS quotas in government colleges at the national level in 2019.

    🗯️ Voices Calling for Action

    • Parent representative Brijesh Sutaria called for the state to appeal to the National Medical Commission (NMC) for a proportional intake increase to preserve fairness.

    • Another parent advocate, Sudha Shenoy, stated that students will approach top state leaders—including the Chief Minister and Education Minister—to press their case before counselling begins.

    • Jasmine Gogri, a medical counsellor in Mumbai, posted her dismay on social media: “It’s a grave injustice toward general category students. Admissions have begun and no clarifications have been provided.”

📌 What Students and Parents Should Know

    • If no action is taken to expand PG and UG medical seats, aspirants in the general category stand to lose access to many preferred institutions.

    • Stakeholders aim to meet the Chief Minister in the next few days, urging a rollback or revision of the reservation policy, or at least a commitment to increasing seat capacity in line with equitable access norms.

    • Any deviations from the Supreme Court’s stance—that EWS quotas should not come at the cost of existing merit seats—could trigger legal or administrative review.

    🧭 Outlook

With counselling likely to begin shortly, students and parents are pushing for swift resolution. Their requests include either retracting the policy or securing an NMC-sanctioned seat expansion to ensure no erosion of open-merit access. The coming days may determine whether Maharashtra aligns with national norms or prioritizes equitable representation at the cost of general category opportunity.
