• November 5, 2024: The Joint Admission Board (JAB) issued a press release stating that candidates who completed their Class 12 examinations in 2023, 2024, and 2025 would be eligible for three attempts at the JEE Advanced.
• November 18, 2024: JAB reversed its decision, reducing the number of permissible attempts from three to two. This abrupt change led to confusion and concern among students who had already altered their academic plans based on the earlier announcement.

Supreme Court’s Decision:

A bench comprising Justices B.R. Gavai and Augustine George Masih recognized the predicament faced by students who had acted on the initial notification. The court observed that the sudden policy reversal within 13 days was detrimental to those who had made significant decisions, such as withdrawing from their current courses, in anticipation of an additional attempt at the examination.

Consequently, the Supreme Court directed that students who withdrew from their courses between November 5 and November 18, 2024, should be allowed to register for the JEE Advanced 2025 examination, effectively granting them a third attempt.
