Education Budget 2025: Just adding 10,000 MBBS seats won’t fix India’s healthcare crisis, say experts

    MBBS

The recent proposal to add 10,000 MBBS seats in India’s medical colleges aims to address the shortage of healthcare professionals. However, experts caution that merely increasing undergraduate seats may not effectively resolve the country’s healthcare challenges. A significant concern is the disparity between undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) medical seats. The 2019 report by the “High Level Group on Health” constituted by the Fifteenth Finance Commission highlighted that the current MBBS training is “not adequate enough to practice medicine and surgery.” The report recommended increasing PG seats and restoring PG diploma programs to ensure comprehensive medical education.

Additionally, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has announced plans to add 8,672 new MBBS seats across 72 new and 30 existing medical colleges for the academic year 2024-2025. While this expansion addresses the immediate need for more medical professionals, experts emphasize the importance of simultaneously increasing PG seats to ensure that graduates can pursue specialized training.

Furthermore, the healthcare sector continues to face challenges such as high out-of-pocket expenditures and a shortage of healthcare personnel. Despite aims to raise healthcare spending to 2.5% of GDP by 2025, India’s spending has hovered around 2%. Data from December 2023 revealed that 39.2% of faculty posts in 20 AIIMS were vacant, indicating a need for more qualified educators to train the increasing number of medical students.

In summary, while increasing MBBS seats is a positive step, experts argue that a holistic approach is necessary. This includes expanding PG training opportunities, enhancing the quality of medical education, and addressing systemic issues within the healthcare infrastructure to effectively tackle India’s healthcare crisis.
