New Delhi, May 14, 2025 — The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has reported a notable improvement in the 2025 board examination results, attributing the success to the increased inclusion of competency-based questions in the exam pattern.

This year, the overall pass percentage for Class 10 rose to 93.66%, a slight increase from last year’s 93.60%. In Class 12, the pass rate improved to 88.39%, up from 87.98% in 2024. Girls continued to outperform boys in both classes, with a 95% pass rate in Class 10 compared to boys’ 92.63%, and 91.64% in Class 12 against boys’ 85.70% .

CBSE officials have credited the improved performance to the strategic shift towards competency-based assessments. “In 2025, CBSE introduced 50% competency-based questions in the examinations. To help the students for better preparation, CBSE had taken various measures including early release of the datesheet, sample papers, and model questions. All efforts have yielded results in the form of improving the results,” said CBSE Examination Controller Sanyam Bhardwaj .

The emphasis on testing higher-order thinking skills has been particularly effective in regions like West Bengal. Among 41,711 examinees from the state, 94.9% passed—surpassing the national average. Educators have noted that the shift from rote memorization to conceptual and analytical learning has significantly contributed to these outcomes .

This educational reform aligns with the National Education Policy 2020’s vision of fostering critical thinking and problem-solving abilities among students. The positive results from the 2025 board examinations suggest that such pedagogical strategies are yielding the desired outcomes, setting a precedent for future academic assessments.
