QS World University 2026 Rankings great news for India’s education sector, says PM

In a major boost to India’s global academic reputation, several Indian universities have made significant strides in the QS World University Rankings 2026, prompting Prime Minister Narendra Modi to hail the achievement as “great news for India’s education sector.”
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi stated,
“The QS Rankings 2026 bring proud moments for India. The remarkable rise of our institutions in global rankings reflects the dedication of our educators, students, and policy reforms that are shaping a new era in Indian education. Congratulations to all!”
Top Indian Performers in QS 2026
Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) has broken into the Top 100, securing the 91st rank, up from 118 in 2025.
IIT Delhi and IISc Bangalore also saw upward movement, ranked 104 and 115 respectively.
Delhi University has re-entered the top 400 list, thanks to improvements in academic reputation and international collaboration.
Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and University of Hyderabad made their debut in the top 500, marking a milestone for public universities focused on liberal arts and social sciences.
What Led to the Rise?
According to QS officials, the improved performance is largely due to:
A strong push for research output and citations per faculty
Increased international collaborations
Enhanced employer reputation and alumni impact
Reforms under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which encouraged greater autonomy, innovation, and global outreach
Global Recognition
Ben Sowter, Senior Vice President at QS Quacquarelli Symonds, commented,
“India’s presence in the global academic landscape is stronger than ever. The combination of policy shifts and academic ambition is placing Indian institutions firmly on the world map.”
Government Response
Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan also praised the rankings, stating,
“This is a testament to India’s transformative journey in education. Initiatives like the NEP, the GATI program for gender equity, and institutional funding reforms are bearing fruit.”
Looking Ahead
With the government set to expand digital infrastructure, international student exchange, and faculty recruitment, analysts believe that India’s position in global university rankings will continue to improve over the next decade.
