UP NEET 2025: Allahabad HC Stays Fresh MBBS Counselling, Directs SC Students Be Adjusted in Vacant Seats

    UP

In a significant development impacting medical admissions in Uttar Pradesh, the Allahabad High Court has stayed the process of fresh MBBS counselling for NEET 2025 in the state. The court also directed authorities to ensure that Scheduled Caste (SC) category students are accommodated in the vacant MBBS seats.

    The Court’s Order

A division bench of the High Court was hearing a petition filed by aggrieved SC students who alleged that despite securing qualifying ranks in NEET 2025, they were being denied seats due to procedural lapses and poor seat allocation.

The bench observed that denying admission to eligible SC candidates while MBBS seats remain vacant would be a serious violation of the constitutional mandate of reservation and equal opportunity.

    Accordingly, the court ordered:

    • A stay on the new round of counselling announced by the Directorate General of Medical Education (DGME), UP.

    • Immediate adjustment of eligible SC candidates against available vacant MBBS seats.

    • Submission of a compliance report from the state counselling authority in the next hearing.

    Background

UP NEET 2025 counselling has been marred by multiple grievances, including:

    • Alleged mishandling of reserved category seats.

    • Vacancies in government and private medical colleges despite the large pool of aspirants.

    • Calls from students and parents for a transparent and fair allocation system.

This is not the first time the High Court has intervened in NEET counselling. In previous years too, courts across India have passed orders ensuring proper implementation of reservation policies.

    Impact on Students

The High Court’s decision has provided relief to several SC aspirants, many of whom feared losing out on MBBS seats despite vacancies. However, the stay on counselling is expected to delay the overall admission schedule for medical colleges in Uttar Pradesh.

Education experts believe this intervention will push the state authorities to adopt stricter monitoring and accountability mechanisms in counselling processes.

    What’s Next?

The matter will be heard again in the coming weeks, when the DGME is expected to submit details of the adjusted admissions. Until then, fresh rounds of counselling will remain on hold in Uttar Pradesh.
