UGC NET mandatory for assistant professor jobs: Jagadesh Kumar clarifies on rules

Recent discussions have emerged regarding the University Grants Commission’s (UGC) draft guidelines, which propose changes to the eligibility criteria for assistant professor positions in higher education institutions. In response, UGC Chairman M. Jagadesh Kumar has provided clarifications to address the concerns and confusion among aspirants and academicians.

    Clarifications by UGC Chairman:

    • Mandatory Requirement for Non-Professional Disciplines: Chairman Kumar emphasized that the National Eligibility Test (NET) remains a mandatory qualification for candidates seeking assistant professor roles in non-professional disciplines, such as Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences. This means that individuals with a master’s degree in these fields are still required to clear the UGC-NET to be eligible for faculty positions.
    • Exemption for Professional Courses: For professional disciplines, particularly in Engineering and Technology, candidates possessing a Master of Engineering (ME) or Master of Technology (MTech) degree are exempt from the NET requirement. This exemption aligns with the recruitment norms established by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).

    Implications of the Draft Guidelines:

The draft guidelines aim to introduce flexibility in the recruitment process by allowing candidates with diverse academic backgrounds to transition across disciplines. For instance, individuals with a four-year undergraduate degree in one discipline and a postgraduate degree in another may be eligible for assistant professor positions, provided they meet the necessary qualifications, including clearing the NET where applicable.

    Conclusion:

In summary, while the UGC is exploring reforms to make the recruitment process more inclusive and multidisciplinary, the NET qualification continues to be a crucial requirement for assistant professor positions in non-professional disciplines. Aspirants are advised to stay updated with official UGC notifications and prepare accordingly to meet the eligibility criteria for their desired academic positions.
