    The Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2026 have been released, showcasing strong performances from several Indian institutions. The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru has made a comeback to the top 250 universities globally, reaffirming its position as India’s leading research-driven institute.

    Meanwhile, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), New Delhi, and Saveetha University, Chennai, have registered significant improvements, marking India’s growing presence in global higher education rankings.


    IISc Bengaluru Shines in Global Rankings

    IISc Bengaluru re-entered the top 250 bracket after showing enhanced performance in research impact, teaching quality, and international outlook. The institute continues to lead India’s representation in the global academic landscape, driven by its high citation score and strong research collaborations.


    Rise of Jamia Millia Islamia and Saveetha University

    According to the latest data, Jamia Millia Islamia and Saveetha University have seen the sharpest rise among Indian universities. JMI’s progress reflects its emphasis on research output, student-faculty ratio, and academic partnerships.
    Saveetha University’s improvement comes from strong performances in clinical, pre-clinical, and health subjects, aligning with its expanding research footprint in medical sciences.


    India’s Growing Representation

    India’s presence in the THE World University Rankings 2026 has expanded, with over 90 institutions making it to the list this year. This marks a steady improvement compared to previous editions, reflecting ongoing efforts to boost research funding, global collaboration, and higher education quality.

    Leading institutions such as IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, and IIT Madras also maintained strong positions within the top 500–600 range.


    Global Leaders

    Globally, universities from the United Kingdom and the United States continue to dominate the top positions. The University of Oxford retained its No. 1 spot for the ninth consecutive year, followed by Stanford University and Harvard University.

    Asian universities, including those from China, Singapore, and Japan, also demonstrated notable growth, signaling increased academic competition across the region.
