NMC Issues Advisory on Unauthorised Medical Colleges and Offshore Programs; Details Rules for Foreign Medical Education

New Delhi, May 20, 2025 — The National Medical Commission (NMC), India’s apex regulatory body for medical education, has issued a comprehensive advisory warning students and parents against enrolling in unauthorized medical colleges and offshore programs that lack proper accreditation. The advisory also outlines stringent guidelines for Indian students pursuing medical education abroad, emphasizing the importance of compliance with the Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate (FMGL) Regulations, 2021.
Unauthorised Medical Colleges in India
The NMC has identified instances of institutions operating without the necessary approvals, misleading students by claiming recognition and offering admissions to unaccredited medical courses. The commission clarified that only medical colleges listed on its official website are legally permitted to offer MBBS and other medical degree programs in India. Students are urged to verify the legitimacy of institutions through the NMC’s official portal before making any commitments.
Offshore Medical Programs and FMGL Regulations
For Indian students seeking medical education abroad, the NMC reiterated the critical requirements under the FMGL Regulations, 2021:
Course Duration: A minimum of 54 months of medical education in a single institution.
Internship: A 12-month internship must be completed at the same foreign university.
Clinical Training: Clinical training should not be fragmented or conducted across different countries.
Medium of Instruction: The entire course must be taught in English.
Curriculum Compliance: The curriculum should align with the subjects specified in Schedule I of the FMGL Regulations.
Failure to adhere to these guidelines may result in disqualification from the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) and ineligibility for medical registration in India.
Student Responsibility and Verification
The NMC emphasized that the responsibility of ensuring compliance with these regulations lies solely with the students. Students are advised to:
Verify the accreditation status of foreign medical institutions.
Ensure the institution’s curriculum and training meet NMC standards.
Be cautious of institutions offering admissions without NEET qualification.
Students can access the list of recognized medical colleges and detailed guidelines on the NMC’s official website: www.nmc.org.in.
Reporting and Assistance
In cases of doubt or to report suspicious institutions, students and parents can contact the NMC directly at:
Phone: +91-11-25367033
Website: www.nmc.org.in
The NMC’s advisory aims to safeguard the interests of medical aspirants and uphold the standards of medical education in India.
