NIOS students eligible for NEET UG 2025, NTA following regulations, clarifies NMC

    Exam

In a recent clarification, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has affirmed that students from the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) are eligible to appear for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test Undergraduate (NEET UG) 2025. This confirmation comes amidst ongoing discussions regarding the inclusion of open school students in national medical entrance examinations.

    NMC’s Official Stance

Responding to an inquiry through the Right to Information (RTI) Act, the NMC stated: “The students are permitted to study an additional subject from NIOS with the condition that the study needs to be carried out from any authorized institutions.”

This indicates that NIOS students, provided they fulfill the necessary subject requirements through authorized institutions, are eligible to sit for NEET UG 2025.

    Historical Context

The eligibility of NIOS students for NEET has been a subject of deliberation in the past. In 2018, the Supreme Court of India issued a circular allowing NIOS candidates to appear for the NEET examination.

This decision was pivotal in ensuring that students from open schooling backgrounds had equitable opportunities in pursuing medical education.

    Current Eligibility Criteria

As per the Graduate Medical Education Regulations (GMER) 2023, candidates aspiring to appear for NEET UG must have completed their 10+2 education with Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology, and English as core subjects. The recent clarification by the NMC reinforces that students who have met these subject requirements through NIOS are eligible for the examination.

    Implications for NIOS Students

This affirmation by the NMC is a significant development for NIOS students aiming for a career in medicine. It ensures that their mode of schooling does not hinder their aspirations to enter medical colleges, provided they meet the stipulated academic criteria.

In conclusion, NIOS students who have completed the required subjects from authorized institutions are eligible to appear for NEET UG 2025. This move by the NMC underscores its commitment to inclusive education and provides clarity to numerous aspirants nationwide.
