NEET UG must for foreign MBBS graduates to obtain eligibility certificate; NMC regulations explained

    NEET UG

The National Medical Commission (NMC) mandates that Indian citizens and Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) intending to pursue an MBBS degree abroad must qualify the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET-UG). The NEET-UG result serves as the Eligibility Certificate for such candidates, provided they meet the criteria outlined in the Graduate Medical Education Regulations, 1997. This result is valid for three years from the date of declaration, allowing candidates to enroll in MBBS or equivalent medical courses abroad during this period.

For students who commenced pre-medical courses abroad in the academic years 2018-19 and 2019-20 without qualifying NEET-UG, the NMC has provided a one-time exemption. These students are required to obtain an Eligibility Certificate from the NMC under the Indian Medical Council Act, 1956.

Additionally, foreign medical graduates must complete their internship within 10 years from the date of joining the foreign medical institution to qualify for the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) or the National Exit Test (NExT).

It’s essential for prospective students to stay updated with the latest NMC regulations and ensure compliance to facilitate a smooth pathway to practicing medicine in India.
