As per the new rules, only wards of NRIs with court-issued legal guardianship will be considered eligible under the NRI category. An official NRI certificate from an Indian Mission abroad also remains mandatory.

• Guardianship Requirement:
  Applicants must now submit a legal guardianship document issued by a court, proving that the NRI sponsor (such as an uncle or aunt) is the legal guardian of the student. Informal or assumed relationships will no longer be sufficient.

• Redefined NRI Category:
  The definition of NRI has been revised under the Maharashtra Unaided Private Professional Educational Institutions Act, aligning it with the Guardians and Wards Act of 1890. This change eliminates eligibility based on distant or loosely connected relatives.

• Students who previously qualified under broader NRI relationships, such as cousins or family friends, will no longer be eligible without formal legal guardianship.

• This reform ensures that only genuine NRI-linked wards benefit from the reserved quota and prevents misuse through distant family ties.
