Maharashtra NEET Counselling 2025: 10% EWS Quota Cuts Deep into Open MBBS Seats in Private Medical Colleges
In a major change for NEET UG aspirants in Maharashtra, the state has implemented a 10% reservation for Economically Weaker Section (EWS) candidates in private, government-aided, and corporation medical colleges under the state quota — excluding minority institutions.
However, unlike previous EWS implementation in government colleges, no increase in total intake has been announced in private colleges. This means the EWS quota is being accommodated by reducing the existing open category seats.
🎯 Impact on Open Category Students:
Maharashtra has around 3,000 open-merit MBBS seats in private colleges.
Nearly 300 of these seats will now be allocated to EWS candidates.
Parents and experts are concerned that open category aspirants now face even tighter competition for fewer seats.
A parent representative highlighted:
“When EWS reservation was introduced in government colleges in 2019, the intake was increased to avoid reducing open seats. This time, no such increase has been granted, putting more pressure on general merit students.”
🏛️ Concerns Raised by Stakeholders:
Private college administrators argue that EWS students already benefit from fee reimbursement schemes (50% for boys, 100% for girls).
They question the need for additional reservation without increasing total capacity.
Experts state that only the National Medical Commission (NMC) can authorize seat increases, and unless the state CET Cell seeks approval, open-merit students will remain affected.
