OVERVIEW

The Joint Entrance Examination (Advanced) is conducted by the IITs under the guidance of the Joint Admission Board (JAB). A candidate’s performance in this examination serves as the basis for admission to the Bachelor’s, Integrated Master’s, and Dual Degree programs (at the 10+2 level) in all IITs.

What’s New in JEE Advanced 2025?

  • Increase in number of attempts: A candidate can attempt JEE (Advanced) a maximum of three times, in three consecutive years.
  • Appearance in Class XII examination: Candidates who appeared for the Class XII (or equivalent) examination for the first time in 2024, and those appearing in 2025 are eligible.

 

ABOUT

Exam Pattern

  • Two papers, each of 3 hours’ duration – Online (Fully computer-based test) mode.
  • Both papers are compulsory.
  • Each question paper consists of three separate sections: Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.
  • The question papers will consist of objective-type questions (multiple-choice and numerical answer type) designed to test the comprehension, reasoning, and analytical ability of candidates.
  • Negative marks will be awarded for incorrect answers to some of the questions.
  • The question papers will be available in both English and Hindi. Candidates will have the option to choose (and switch between) their preferred language at any time during the examination.

 

Schedule

The JEE (Advanced) – 2025 will be held on Sunday, May 18, 2025, as per the following schedule:

  • Paper 1: 09:00 to 12:00 IST
  • Paper 2: 14:30 to 17:30 IST

Performance in JEE (Main) 2025

  • A candidate must clear the JEE (Main) cutoff to be eligible to take the JEE (Advanced) exam. The top 2,50,000 candidates (across all categories) in JEE Main Paper-1 will be eligible.
  • Note: The total number of eligible candidates may slightly exceed 2,50,000 in the event of tied ranks or scores in any category.

Age limit

A candidate must have been born on or after October 1, 2000. Age relaxation of 5 years is provided for SC, ST, and PwD candidates.

 

Number of attempts

A candidate can attempt JEE (Advanced) a maximum of two times in consecutive years. Therefore, candidates who appeared for JEE (Advanced) for the first time in 2024 are also eligible.

Appearance in Class XII (or equivalent) examination

  • A candidate must have appeared for the Class XII (or equivalent) examination for the first time in 2024, or 2025, with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as compulsory subjects.
  • Candidates whose Class XII (or equivalent) examination results for the academic year 2022-23 were declared after June 28, 2023, are also eligible.

 

Earlier admission at IITs

  • A candidate must NOT have been admitted to an IIT (irrespective of whether or not they continued in the program) or accepted an IIT seat by reporting online or at a reporting center in the past.
  • Candidates whose admission to IITs was cancelled after joining any IIT are also NOT eligible.
  • Candidates who have been admitted to a preparatory course at any of the IITs for the first time in 2024 are eligible to appear for JEE (Advanced) 2025.
  • Candidates who were allocated a seat in an IIT through JoSAA 2024 but (i) did not report online or at any reporting center, (ii) withdrew before the last round of seat allotment, or (iii) had their seat cancelled (for any reason) before the last round of seat allotment, are eligible.

 

Foreign Nationals

  • Candidates who are not citizens of India (by birth or naturalized) and are not Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) or Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) with an OCI/PIO card issued before March 4, 2021, will be considered foreign nationals.
  • Foreign national candidates do not need to appear for JEE (Main) 2025 and can register directly for JEE (Advanced) 2025, provided they meet all other eligibility criteria.
  • Foreign nationals will be considered in addition to the 2,50,000 Indian nationals who qualify for JEE (Advanced) 2025, but they will not be part of this 2,50,000.

Procedure

Registration

  • The registrations for JEE (Advanced) 2025 are expected to begin in April 2025.
  • Only candidates who satisfy all the eligibility criteria can register.
  • The last date to register is expected to be in May 2025.

 

Application Procedure

Steps

  • Step 1: Fill Registration Form at JEE (Adv) web portal.
  • Step 2: Upload Scanned Certificates.
  • Step 3: Pay Registration Fee.

 

Required Documents

All Candidates

  • Class X certificate (if the date of birth is mentioned in it) OR Birth certificate.
  • Class XII (or equivalent examination) certificate (for those who appeared for this examination in 2024 or 2025 or whose board declared the Class XII (or equivalent examination) result after June 28, 2023).

 

Admit Card

  • Candidates who successfully register for the JEE (Advanced) examination can download the admit card from the JEE (Advanced) portal as per the notified schedule.
  • The admit card will contain the Name, Roll number, Photograph, Signature, Date of birth, Category, Address of the candidate, Address of the Test Centre allotted, and Test schedule.
  • Candidates should carefully examine the entries in the admit card and in case of any discrepancy, contact the Chairman, JEE (Advanced) 2025 of the respective zonal coordinating IIT.
  • A printed copy of the downloaded admit card along with an original photo identity card should be produced at the time of examination.

 

 

Note

  • Candidates have to compulsorily choose 8 cities/towns of their choice at the time of online registration.
  • Efforts will be made to allot the city/town from among the candidate’s choices, but a different city/town may be allotted under exceptional circumstances.
  • Requests for change of city/town will not be entertained under any circumstances.

Result

Candidate Responses

  • The responses of the candidates who have appeared for both Paper 1 and Paper 2, recorded during the exam, will be available for them to view, download, and print from the JEE (Advanced) candidate portal.
  • Candidates can access a copy of their responses as per the notified schedule.

 

Answer Keys

  • The provisional answer keys for both the papers will be displayed on the JEE (Advanced) website as per the notified schedule.
  • The provisional answer key is only tentative and is subject to change.
  • Candidates who are not satisfied with the answer key may challenge it online during the stipulated time.
  • The final answer key will be made available as per the notified schedule.
  • In the event that a question needs to be dropped, full marks for that question will be awarded to all candidates.

Rank List

  • Only candidates who appear in both Paper 1 and Paper 2 will be considered for ranking.
  • The rank list will be prepared based on the aggregate marks obtained by the candidate.
  • A candidate who qualifies in more than one category will be considered in all the categories to which he/she belongs for the purpose of ranking.
  • Only candidates who score the minimum prescribed marks in each subject and in aggregate will be included in the rank list.

 

Result

  • Results will be available on the JEE (Advanced) website once they are notified.
  • Category-wise All India Ranks (AIR) of successful candidates will be available on the JEE (Advanced) website after the results are declared.
  • Individual rank cards will not be sent to candidates.

Important Information

  • Only pens, pencils, drinking water in a transparent bottle, the downloaded admit card, and an original photo identity card are permitted inside the examination hall.
  • Candidates arriving at the examination centre after the commencement of the examination for each paper (09:00 IST for Paper 1 and 14:30 IST for Paper 2) will not be allowed to take the test.

Counselling

Admission to IITs

For admission to IITs, a candidate must have passed the Class XII (or equivalent) Board examination.

For admission to IITs, a candidate should satisfy at least one of the following two criteria:

  • Must have secured at least 75% aggregate marks in the Class XII (or equivalent) Board examination. For SC, ST, and PwD candidates, the aggregate marks should be at least 65%.
  • Must be within the category-wise top 20 percentile of successful candidates in his/her respective Class XII (or equivalent) board examination.

 

All seats allocated to foreign nationals will be supernumerary, with a cap of 10% of the total seats in each course. Foreign nationals are not eligible for any reservation under the GEN-EWS, OBC-NCL, SC, ST, or PwD categories.
