The new programme aligns with National Education Policy guidelines but faces criticism over rushed implementation

Delhi University is gearing up to introduce a one-year postgraduate programme from 2026, designed to align with the National Education Policy (NEP). The proposal, which outlines significant changes to the existing postgraduate framework, is set to be debated at the Academic Council meeting scheduled for December 27. However, concerns have emerged among faculty members, who argue that the administration is expediting the decision-making process without adequate consultation.

The university recently implemented a four-year undergraduate programme, currently in its third semester. Under this system, students can exit after one year with a certificate, after two years with a diploma, and after three years with a degree. Completing the fourth year awards students an honours degree.

Graduates of the three-year programme can opt for a two-year postgraduate course, while those completing the four-year programme will be eligible for the one-year postgraduate course. Work is underway to develop distinct curricula for both options.

In the one-year postgraduate programme, students will earn 22 credits per semester, totalling 44 credits. Meanwhile, the two-year programme will require students to complete 88 credits. According to University Grants Commission (UGC) guidelines, the one-year degree is classified as Level 7, whereas the two-year degree is categorised as Level 6.5.
