CBSE board exams twice a year from 2026-27; 2 subject groups, ‘better of two marks’ in draft policy

    CBSE

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is set to implement significant reforms in its examination structure starting from the 2026-27 academic session. In alignment with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the board plans to conduct Class 10 board examinations twice a year, offering students multiple opportunities to perform and reducing the stress associated with a single high-stakes exam.

Key Highlights of the Proposed Changes:

    • Biannual Examinations: Students will have the option to appear for board exams twice within an academic year. The schedule for these exams is yet to be finalized, but the initiative aims to provide flexibility and alleviate exam-related pressure.

    • Best Score Consideration: In cases where a student takes the exam twice, the higher score will be considered for their final assessment, ensuring that students have the opportunity to improve their performance without penalty.

    • Subject Groupings: The draft policy proposes categorizing subjects into two groups:

      • Group A: Core subjects such as Mathematics, Science, and Social Science.
      • Group B: Elective subjects and languages.

This categorization aims to streamline the examination process and provide clarity on subject-wise assessments.

    • Global Curriculum Introduction: CBSE is also planning to launch a global curriculum tailored for foreign students by the 2026-27 academic year. This initiative seeks to align CBSE’s education standards with international benchmarks, facilitating a more inclusive and comprehensive learning experience for students worldwide.

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has emphasized that these reforms are designed to create a more flexible and stress-free learning environment. The draft policy detailing these changes is expected to be released soon for public consultation, inviting feedback from educators, parents, and students to ensure a holistic and effective implementation.

These proposed changes reflect a significant shift towards a more student-centric education system, aiming to foster better learning outcomes and well-being among students.
