The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) announced their plan of “establishing and implementing” their Global Curriculum’ for 2026-2027 academic year. Under this curriculum, a major reform suggests plans to introduce board exams to be conducted twice a year from 2026. The proposed timeline for the exams would be November-December and February-March. The best score of the biannual exams would be considered for the final result.
Reducing exam stress and the flexibility of subject selection are main reasons behind this decision while improving the students’ chance at enhancing their academic and career goals.
With collaboration from NCERT, KVS, NVS and CBSE-affiliated international schools, this curriculum aims to provide a standardised and globally competitive learn experience for students in CBSE schools outside India.
Many educators view this as a positive step towards easing out the exam stress and reforming the Indian Education System. Students and other stakeholders are weary of the increased frequency of exams and the effect it may have on them. The success of this decision relies heavily on improved infrastructure, institutional support and acceptance from the students and parents.
A seamless transition and modification of the teaching pedagogy strategies may also be an important requirement. While the introduction of biannual CBSE board exams from 2026 marks a significant shift in India’s education system, it primarily aims to reduce student stress and enhance academic flexibility.
