Placement Season: IIT-Kanpur Off To ‘Promising’ Start With 579 Offers On Day 1; IIT-Delhi, Bombay Join In

After last year’s slump, on-campus recruitments at the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are off to a “promising” start as the placements season kicks off.
IIT-Kanpur saw 579 of its students bag job offers on Day 1 of placement interviews on Monday. IIT- Delhi and IIT-Bombay also said the number of recruiters coming to campus this year is larger than last year.
IIT-Kanpur is among the first-generation IITs. The first phase of placements at all first-generation IITs begins from December 1 and lasts for a fortnight.
Last year, placements across IITs were hit by a global economic slowdown, in particular in the IT industry, the effects of which now seem to be weaning off.
According to placement cell executives at IIT-Kanpur, 523 students were offered positions through a combination of campus placements and Pre-Placement Offers (PPOs) from leading companies on Day 1.
“Among these, 199 students stood out by accepting PPOs from leading national and international firms. Adding to the institute’s global reputation, 13 students received international job offers, highlighting the global demand for IIT students. This year has started on a promising note,” said a placement cell executive at IIT-K.
PPOs refers to job offers that students get in advance from companies during their summer internships.
The first day saw 74 firms coming down on campus. Some of the companies that emerged as top recruiters include Microsoft, Texas Instruments, Databricks, Google, American Express, SLB, and Deutsche Bank.
Prof Raju Kumar Gupta, chairperson, Students’ Placement Office, IIT-Kanpur, said: “We look forward to maintaining this momentum and achieving new benchmarks in placement success as the session progresses.”
Prof Manindra Agrawal, director, IIT-Kanpur, said: “The large number of offers from leading companies on Day 1, including a significant number of international placements, highlights the global recognition of the academic excellence and the calibre of our students. We hope to have a good year.”
Similarly, placement cell executives at IIT-Delhi and IIT-Bombay, also first-generation IITs, said this year, the season has started on a good note with a large number of leading recruiters coming down for hiring in campus.
Prof R Ayothiraman, in-charge of the Office of Career Services (OCS), IIT-Delhi, said: “We have a large number of profiles lined up to visit the campus in the weeks ahead and we believe this would cater to all aspiring students. We are positive that at the end of the exercise the recruiters would concur.”
In the 2023-24 session, IIT-Delhi students got 1,222 job offers while 741 internship offers were received. “The excitement for the upcoming season is built on the exit survey done among the graduated students in August 2024. The survey revealed that only 5 per cent students were still looking for appropriate career opportunities. A large fraction of these students comprised PhD scholars looking for post-doctoral research opportunities abroad,” he said.
