UK, India to Establish Mining Technology Satellite Campus at IIT-ISM Dhanbad

In a significant step towards advancing research and innovation in the mining sector, the United Kingdom and India have announced plans to set up a Mining Technology Satellite Campus at the Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines), Dhanbad.
The initiative is aimed at fostering collaboration in mining engineering, mineral exploration, sustainable mining practices, and advanced extraction technologies. The satellite campus will serve as a hub for joint research projects, student and faculty exchange programmes, and industry-oriented training.
According to officials, the collaboration will focus on integrating modern technology — including automation, artificial intelligence, and environmental management systems — into mining operations to enhance efficiency and reduce environmental impact.
Experts from leading UK universities and research centres will work alongside IIT-ISM faculty to develop new curricula and research programmes, ensuring that students gain exposure to cutting-edge global mining practices.
Construction of the satellite campus is expected to begin later this year, with the first batch of students anticipated to commence studies by 2026. The move is also expected to strengthen Indo-UK educational and industrial partnerships in critical mineral resource development.
