NIRF Ranking 2025: New category, negative marking; what changes this year?

The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2025 is set to bring significant methodological changes, marking a shift towards more responsible and impact-driven ranking criteria.
1. New Sustainability (SDG) Category
For the first time, NIRF has introduced a new ranking dimension based on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Institutions will be evaluated on their efforts related to UN SDGs — such as promoting gender equality, reducing inequalities, supporting inclusive education, emphasizing climate action, and implementing green campus or clean energy initiatives. This reflects the Ministry’s renewed focus on holistic, socially relevant education.
2. Negative Marking for Retracted Research Papers
In a landmark move to uphold academic integrity, institutions will now face negative scoring in the “Research and Professional Practices” parameter if their published papers are later retracted. The penalty will be calculated based on the count or percentage of retractions — sending a clear message against unethical publication practices. The framework applies even to papers that were counted in previous years but later withdrawn.
Why This Matters
These updates indicate a significant evolution in how higher education institutions are assessed — not just on academic performance but also on ethical conduct and societal contribution. Institutions prioritizing sustainability and integrity stand to benefit more than ever.
