WBJEE Results Postponed Amid OBC Reservation Legal Battle, Board Chief Says

    WBJEE

The announcement of the West Bengal Joint Entrance Exam (WBJEE) 2025 results has been delayed, board chairperson Sonali Chakravarti Banerjee confirmed on Saturday. Although the results were ready on June 5, the board was compelled to withhold their release due to ongoing legal proceedings over the OBC reservation policy.

As per the 2014 WBJEE Act, the West Bengal government holds authority over examination-related decisions and can direct the board accordingly. Banerjee emphasized that the board “has no power regarding the OBC issue” and acted only after the matter became sub-judice.

The trigger for the delay is a Calcutta High Court interim stay, issued on June 17, against a state government notification that included 76 additional castes under OBC-A and OBC-B categories. This order, valid until July 31, effectively stalled publication of category-wise merit lists required for the results.

    ⚠️ Students Voice Distress

A group of around 500 aspirants, operating under the WBJEE Students’ Forum, sent a letter expressing frustration with the prolonged silence. They highlighted the severe mental stress and uncertainty caused by the delay. Key concerns included:

    • Missing parallel counselling cycles such as JEE Main and CUET

    • Private colleges and universities starting admissions independently

    • Risk of losing admission opportunities as colleges commence classes

“Yet no official update or tentative date … such prolonged uncertainty is causing us extreme mental stress.”

    🏫 Institutional Impact

Educational bodies, including the Jadavpur University Teachers’ Association (JUTA), warn that public government colleges like JU, GCECT, GCELT, and others remain unable to proceed with BTech admissions. Meanwhile, many private institutions continue admission drives, prompting top students to migrate out of the state or enroll at higher fees.

    🔮 Timeline & Outlook

    • Exam Date: April 27, 2025

    • Original Result Date: June 5, 2025

    • Legal Stay Duration: June 17 – July 31, 2025

Despite students’ mounting anxiety and strong administrative readiness, no new release date has been set. Authorities continue to await legal resolution. With the court next scheduled to hear the issue on July 24, the results are likely to follow thereafter.

    📌 What Candidates Should Know

    • CBT scorecards and rank lists remain on hold pending final word on OBC reservation norms.

    • WBJEE Board has confirmed its readiness but cannot act until receiving government directives.

    • Students are advised to keep checking the official WBJEEB website and stay in touch with counselling authorities once results become available.
