NEET Counselling 2025: MBBS Fees Soar Over ₹1 Crore at 32 Deemed Medical Colleges

As NEET UG Counselling 2025 gears up to begin, a major concern has emerged for aspirants and parents alike — the skyrocketing cost of MBBS education in deemed universities. This year, 32 deemed medical colleges across India are charging more than ₹1 crore for the MBBS course, a sharp rise from just 16 such colleges in 2022–23.
📈 Fee Surge Highlights
The highest annual tuition fee has reached ₹30.5 lakh, pushing the total cost of the 4.5-year MBBS program to nearly ₹1.37 crore.
With additional charges for hostel, mess, lab, library, and transport, the total expense may exceed ₹1.5 crore for some institutions.
Examples include:
Sree Balaji Medical College, Chennai – ₹30.5 lakh/year
Sri Ramachandra Institute, Chennai – ₹30 lakh/year
🔍 What’s Causing the Fee Hike?
Deemed universities operate with minimal regulation, allowing them to revise fees at their discretion.
Some colleges have increased fees by as much as ₹8 lakh in a single year.
Unlike state or central medical colleges, deemed universities are not bound by strict fee caps, resulting in significantly higher costs.
⚠️ Parental Concerns and Transparency Issues
Parents are raising concerns about lack of transparency, with several institutions not clearly disclosing hostel or ancillary charges upfront.
In states like Tamil Nadu, total annual expenses (beyond tuition) may add another ₹2.5 lakh, covering lodging, transportation, insurance, etc.
🏛️ Call for Regulation
Health experts and education activists are demanding tighter regulation and cap on MBBS fees in deemed institutions.
A recent parliamentary panel also flagged the issue and recommended urgent reforms to ensure affordability and equity in medical education.
🗓️ NEET UG Counselling 2025 Timeline
