The Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIITs) are prestigious autonomous institutions specializing in Information Technology and Communication Studies. Widely regarded of the top engineering colleges in India, ranking just after the IITs and NITs, IIITs have become popular among aspiring engineers.
Currently, there are 26 IIITs across the country, five of which are designated as Institutes of National Importance. The remaining 21 operate under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. Admission to IIITs is granted through the JEE Main exam, followed by the JoSAA counselling process.

In the NIRF 2024 rankings for engineering institutes in India, IIIT Hyderabad made its debut and secured the top position among all IIITs. IIITDM Jabalpur climbed to 80th rank, improving slightly from its previous 81st position, while IIIT Allahabad was placed at 87th. Types of Courses Offered at IIITs
While most IIITs primarily offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs in Information Technology and Communication, a few- such as IIITDM Kanchipuram IIITDM Kurnool and IIIT Bhagalpur- also provides BTech, MTech and Dual Degree programs in Mechanical Engineering. Entrance Exams for Admissions at IIITs
Although all IITs funcion autonomously, they are connected through a unified admission process. Admission to undergraduate engineering programs at IIITs is based on the JEE Main exam. Since 2018, the National Testing Agency (NTA) has been conducting the exam twice a year- in January and April- for admission to IIITs, IITs, NITs and CFTIs.
