CBSE Class 10 exams twice a year from 2026; 64.4% students in favor, second attempt optional

In a significant move aimed at reducing academic pressure and giving students a second chance to improve their performance, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced that Class 10 board exams will be conducted twice a year starting from 2026. This decision is aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasizes flexibility and student well-being.
According to CBSE, the second attempt will be completely optional and available only to those students who wish to improve their scores.
📊 Survey: Majority of Students in Favor
A recent feedback survey conducted by the board revealed that 64.4% of Class 10 students supported the idea of having two chances at the board exam. The move is seen as a way to reduce exam anxiety, offer more preparation time, and help students perform better without the fear of a “one-shot” exam.
🗓️ How the Two-Exam System Will Work:
First Board Exam: Likely to be held in November–December
Second Board Exam: Scheduled for March–April
Students can appear in both exams, but the best score will be considered for final results.
The second attempt is not mandatory – only for those who wish to improve.
📝 Key Benefits:
Reduces exam pressure and mental stress
Encourages gradual and consistent preparation
Offers a fair second chance for improvement
Helps align with international assessment standards
🧒 CBSE’s Statement:
“Starting from 2026, Class 10 board exams will be conducted twice a year to provide students flexibility and a better assessment of learning. The decision was made after extensive consultations and survey responses from students, parents, and teachers,” said a senior CBSE official.
🎓 What About Class 12?
Currently, the twice-a-year exam policy applies only to Class 10. However, CBSE has indicated that similar changes for Class 12 may be considered in the future, based on the success and reception of the new system at the Class 10 level.
