159 KIIT students have returned to Nepal so far: Official

In the aftermath of the tragic death of 20-year-old Nepali student Prakriti Lamsal at Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) in Odisha, significant developments have unfolded. Lamsal, a third-year B.Tech (Computer Science) student, was found deceased in her hostel room on February 16, 2025, an incident initially reported as a suicide. This event led to unrest on the campus, with approximately 500 Nepali students protesting and alleging administrative negligence regarding Lamsal’s prior complaints of harassment by a fellow student.
Following the protests, reports emerged that Nepali students were instructed to vacate their hostels, leading to confusion and distress among the student community. As of February 21, 2025, 159 Nepali students have returned to Nepal via the Raxaul border.
In response to the incident, the Nepalese Embassy in New Delhi has been actively engaged, urging an impartial investigation into Lamsal’s death and emphasizing the safety and well-being of Nepali students at KIIT. The embassy has coordinated with Indian authorities and the Odisha state government to address these concerns.
The Odisha Higher Education Department has summoned KIIT founder Achyuta Samanta as part of the ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding Lamsal’s death.
This incident has garnered significant attention, leading to diplomatic discussions between Nepal and India, and raising concerns about the safety and treatment of international students in educational institutions.
