India has secured a remarkable 7th position among 110 countries at the 66th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) 2025, held at the Sunshine Coast in Australia, marking a significant achievement in the country’s mathematical journey on the global stage.

The Indian team brought home a total of six medalsthree gold, two silver, and one bronze — along with the highest team score ever recorded by India at IMO: 193 out of 252.

    🇮🇳 Medal Winners from India:

    • Gold: Kanav Talwar, Aarav Gupta, Adhitya Mangudy

    • Silver: Abel George Mathew, Aadish Jain

    • Bronze: Archit Manas

This is only the second time India has won three gold medals, the first being in 1998, and matches the nation’s previous 7th place finish from 1998 and 2001. Last year, India achieved its best-ever rank of 4th, winning four golds.

    Record-Breaking Performance

The record score of 193 demonstrates India’s rising prominence in global mathematics competitions. Since 2019, India has won 12 gold medals, with nine of them earned in the last three years — a testament to the country’s growing excellence in the field.

    Training and Selection

India’s participation is organised by the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE), under the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research. The team was led by Professor Shanta Laishram (ISI Delhi) and Dr Mainak Ghosh (ISI Bengaluru), with observers Atul Shatavart Nadig (MIT, USA) and Dr Rijul Saini.

HBCSE is responsible for conducting national-level selection exams, training camps, and mentoring programs for the Olympiad team.

    About the IMO

The International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) is the world’s most prestigious mathematics competition for high school students. Participants solve six complex problems over two days, testing their skills in algebra, combinatorics, geometry, and number theory.

In 2025, the event welcomed 630 students from 110 countries, making India’s top-10 finish a notable accomplishment.

    Rising Global Presence

India’s consistent performance over the last several years underlines a robust mathematical education framework and the dedication of young minds who continue to shine on the international stage.
